Last year, Mike and I decided that 2022 would be dedicated to renovating our house. The kitchen and bathrooms are all original from when the house was built in the 1980s and need to be redone. We’d finally be getting rid of the cat cabinet! But, over the summer, I found myself losing sleep as I struggled with how far I wanted to go with the renovation. Should this just be the most economical fix to upgrade? Or was this our forever home and my last opportunity to give myself the dream space I always wanted? And if that was the case, what did I really want?
I have to say, when I open instagram and the circle around your account is green, I can’t wait to find out what you’re sharing with the smaller group! Eeek!
Exciting things to come for the mommyshorts family. Glad we’re along for the ride!
I think it’s fitting that you mentioned the amazing view just under the two pictures of the girls. While it’s true the view outside your windows has been pretty fun to look at, the view you see on the inside is what matters the most!
You own your current apartment, I believe. Are you planning on selling it or renting it out?
It was time to move on. It will be exciting to explore a new neighborhood and give your family some breathing room. Being closer to friends is a game changer for you and especially to the kids. Congratulations!
My girls shared a room until middle school. They are twins so slightly different. BUT it was life changing to give them their own rooms, and that’s not an exaggeration. Enjoy the newly found freedom and independence that this gives YOU as you no longer have to be the traffic cop, negotiator and peacemaker who makes the shared space work.
I’m so excited for you all! It’ll be so good! My 3 share a room (6 year old and 3 year old twins) but that’s because they want to and they’re still little. 6 year old doesn’t want to sleep alone so I totally get that! And we have an office space so I can finally work from home uninterrupted. As they get older I know we’ll need more rooms but for now, it works 🙌🏻
I really can’t wait to see the new apartment! I’m glad that you’re doing what is best for the family - the view has been great and your followers have been so lucky to have you share it all these years, but it’s going to be really exciting to be able to share this new part of your life too!
Are you planning on renting out your current apartment when you move out? Will you continue to look for a 3br to buy in NYC or are you content with renting for now?
congratulations!! although i love your appartement i admire you for recognizing that you need something new and following through! i’m sure you‘ll make the new place your own and as wonderful as your old one!
Congrats! Super exciting. I hadn't realized that TriBeca was more of a family neighborhood. Good luck with move! My kids are exact same age as Mazzy and Harlow and share a room still, but it is getting OLD...especially bc it is boy/girl. We have an extra room that we keep selling them on switching into, but at the end of the day, they still want to sleep in same room...I am sure that will change any moment. Grateful for the extra space...but its still tight in our apartment and I wouldnt mind having MY own room to get away from everyone...especially through this G-damn dragging on pandemic!
So exciting! My family (husband, 2 kids) are thinking of relocating across the country to hav more space and be loser to my sisters and their kids. I'm excited to follow along with your move and hear about how being closer to community impacts your quality of life. It's a big driver for us, but also feels scary to make such a big move with little kids.
Congratulations! Hubs and I had a longstanding agreement we would leave the city (DC) when our oldest (Mazzy's age) hit highschool. Enter COVID and we fast-tracked the plan to move in 2020 and we headed for rural, central Virginia. More space, and outdoor space, has been essential - and we're finally meeting people. But it's so hard to build a new life in your 40s. It will be so much easier for you guys to settle in with your community already nearby!
I can’t wait to see the new place! We made a city to country (Toronto to Vermont) move three years ago. There was lots of reasons: my husband’s commute was getting worse and worse, the public school system wasn’t meeting our son’s needs etc but a big one was the size of our house in midtown Toronto. We’d been in it for 8 years and the kids were just about to be tweens and we all of sudden felt like everyone was was on top of each other all the time. Even three years later we still marvel at what a good idea it was to move.
Congratulations!! That sounds like an amazing move for your family. I can’t wait to see pictures of the new place! I’m curious if you’ll be selling your current place and why you chose to rent the new space instead of purchasing. (My sister and I shared a room for years and getting our own space was life changing).
Did the experience of the botched renovation and everything you went through with that experience factor into your feeling of wanting to move? Before the renovation had you planned on staying?

So the market is that competitive for rentals?! Will you sell your current place or rent it out?
