BKSG: When Do You Know If Your Child Should See a Therapist?

Welcome to the Big Kid Support Group (BKSG)! This is a discussion thread for paid subscribers and my attempt to create a safe space for moms of big kids, tweens and teens. All support group questions come from within this community and are submitted anonymously through this form. Today’s question deals with child therapy. I’ll answer myself and then open it up to the group for discussion.

You recently mentioned taking Harlow for therapy (in the post about her school award for responsibility). How do you know when to take a kid for therapy? My child struggles with some anxiety, and I wonder if therapy would be helpful for them. Looking back, I can see that I also struggled with anxiety as a child, and I wonder if therapy would’ve been helpful at a younger age than when I started.
